shrine first consecrated in 1932 after 12 years of construction. Standing
on the site of former churches dating back to the 16th century, the latest
structure has been built in a Neo-Roman style and has become a
popular site for pilgrims as well as having so far received two Papal
visits.
In 2014, work began on the construction of a new courtyard entrance
featuring curved outer walls decorated with biblical mosaics. To cater
for visitors a car park was also built across the road from the Basilica.
Formed on two levels the car park was constructed using Grasscrete
GC2 (150mm thick) paving, so as to offer low-level of visual intrusion as
well providing the environmental benefits of a permeable paving,
eliminating the need for major on and offsite drainage works.
